"China's official sports association has issued an unprecedented public criticism of Yao Ming for reporting late to national team training.

The Houston Rockets' star was faulted for taking too much time off to recover from his last NBA season. The government's All-China Sports Federation also said he spent too much time planning his wedding and making appearances for the Special Olympics and 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

"No matter how lofty public welfare activities are, they can't be allowed to take first place in a player's life,'' the China Sports Daily, a federation-owned newspaper, said in an article appearing Tuesday.

"No matter how sweet personal life is, it can't be compared to the exultation of capturing glory for one's nation,'' the article said. "

I think the Chinese are ridiculous for all this. It is bad enough there is such a hassle to get Chinese players into the NBA and that the Chinese players have to pay the Chinese government out of their salary for permission to play in the United States. Since they are doing that, they should have the right to live normally and not be criticized by the national team. Yao is a pretty stand up guy and doesn't deserve that from that team. In my opinion if he were recovering from a season in a Chinese league he wouldn't hear about this.

Everything concerning Yao's pro career revolves around national Chinese basketball and its association. He would not be playing in the NBA without agreements between the pro league and national association %26amp; Yao is basically a showcase of the Chinese sports system of grooming athletes. This is a major faux pau on Yao's part...that is how it is seen in his nation.
