Am I the only one who thinks Reggie Miller wasn't that great?

A question here was asked which retired Jordan Era NBA player deserved to win a championship but didn't. He listed Malone %26amp; Stockton, Barkley, Ewing, %26amp; Reggie Miller. Personally I don't think Miller deserves to be on that list at all but there were quite a few statements like this:

"Reggie Miller is probably the best ever not to win a ring.

You would expect nothing of this guy but just consistency.

He is the most consistent player in his league (excluding Jordan)."

My argument would be Reggie Miller is only a 5 time All-Star, Malone went 14 times, Ewing %26amp; Barkley went 11, Stockton went 10. Miller was never an NBA 1st Teamer (3rd team, 3 times), never finished in the top 10 in MVP voting, %26amp; has no appearances on the All Defensive Team.

I would say in his era, Miller was maybe the 2nd or 3rd best SG in the East. He's nowhere near the same class as Jordan or Drexler mostly because of his lack of defense. I would list Miller slightly above Mitch Richmond %26amp; Latrell Sprewell.

I completely agree. People tend to be so caught up in his spectacular clutch plays that they overlook the numerous deficiencies in his game. For those who never watched Miller play (which seem like many of the posters above), the guy was a poor ball-handler, a poor passer, and a poor rebounder. To compensate for his mediocre defense, he took the art of flopping to a level that would embarrass even Vlade Divac.

But what effectively separated him from the players of the upper echelon was his inability to create his own shot. His offensive repertoire consisted solely of running defenders off screens for wide open jumpers. He was more or less a Rip Hamilton with a longer range. To his credit, Reggie was an exceptional pure-shooter and clutch performer but his one-dimensional game and inadequacies in all other aspects of the game make him a second-tier star at best.

If you haven't seen his showdown with Larry Bird and the NY Knickerbockers you should keep your opinions by yourself.

He's clutch and clutch shots makes you great.

Additional:

Horry wasn't the one leading his team, On the other hand Miller is the Pacers, and will forever be in it's history books as their best player to date until someone actually leads them to the gold.
Reggie Miller was great -- at kicking defenders in the chest, then falling backwards, and then somehow getting to shoot freethrows!!! I can't count how many times I saw him do that -- and it always made me mad!
Yeah he sucks. He only scored 8 points in 8.9 seconds. He only is more clutch than anyone and has more 3 pointers than any one in the History of the NBA. He only had (24) four point plays. He also was Handicap at a young age and wore leg braces to walk. Just another Joe, come on dude....lol. He stood up against Michael and the Bulls and Pat and the knicks like nobody else. He was a WARRIOR...
i do not agree with you but i know you aren't alone.....
RE: Mark

I agree with Murder that hitting 40+ game winning shots has nothing to do with anything. All that means is that Reggie Miller's teams played in WAY MORE close games than Jordan did because Jordan was busy burying teams and hitting clutch shots for championships. Miller had to hit all of those shots to win regular season games and has nothing to show for it, probably because he got torched on the other side of the court all of the time. Nobody is questioning his offensive skills here.

If I were to pick an all time NBA team, Miller wouldn't be in the top ten on my shooting guard list.

No corresponding facts or whatsoever? Miller has ZERO rings, and less career steals than Kendall Gill and Jeff Hornacek, and barely cracks the top 100 of ALL TIME in assists...Charles Barkley has more assists than Miller for Pete's sake and Barkley played on three different teams!

Again, I'm not saying Miller wasn't clutch or couldn't hit a 3, I just agree that realistically it didn't do much for him and his team.

___________

I'd like to know how I suck at this when you're posting basically opinions about how good two really good coaches and one average player thought Miller was.

Here's some Reggie Miller facts

1. All NBA 3rd Team 3 times meaning that in his 15 year NBA career, Miller was the 3rd best shoting guard in the league only three times. The other 12 years of his career, the majority of his career I might add, he wasn't even the 4th best shooting guard in the league AS VOTED BY 129 MEMBERS OF THE PRESS.

2. Not ONE appearance on the NBA All Defensive team in FIFTEEN YEARS - The All Defensive Team is voted by the COACHES.

3. Reggie Miller, #7 in all time minutes played (7,000+ more than Jordan) is only #34 in all time steals, Jordan is #2 on that list with giving Miller a 7,000+ list cushion.

4. Miller doesn't even show up in the top 200 of all time, Jordan on the other hand is #88 in all time blocks, ahead of Barkley and Larry Bird.

5. Miller isn't in the top 250 all time in total rebounds. Michael Jordan is #111, ahead of Magic and Sloan.

FACT: Miller's game is ONE DIMENSIONAL and I just listed a bunch of facts to prove it ADDED to the fact that you keep giving me excuses on why if Miller was such a complete player and leader, why did he never get to the Finals?
Watch the games when Jordan and Miller went at it. He is as clutch as anybody is.

Jordan had only 25 game-winning shots.

Miller had 40+ of them.

-------------------------------

It's your opinion, so there's nothing wrong with that.

-------------------------------

Isn't he complete?

25,279 points, 4,141assists, 4182 rebounds, 1,505 steals.

Tell me other players who have the same record or even more than what Reggie Miller had.

--------------------------------

rick whoever, if you would look at Reggie's lineup then, tell me, who do you consider an All-Star?

That just means Reggie is ice-cold come pressure times.

Bad logic you gave there, does that mean that Reggie played in games that were decided 3 or less points in 40 games?

Jordan had missed way too many clutch shots, because his team was also like Miller's team.

And if i were you, i'd study a bit more than bash my thoughts without no corresponding facts or whatsoever.

-------------------------------

See, your illogical conception on us is that we came from Indiana.

You see your stupidity right there.

Does it mean that if we love Dennis Rodman then we came from San Antonio or Chicago?

Go and talk to the sports analysts and ask them on how great is Reggie Miller. They will tell you something that ignorant fools never knew.

------------------------

how about you read this and then tell me what to say, http://www.nba.com/pacers/news/reggie_tr...

Those people are LEGIT commentators on Reggie's play, not just like you who thinks he's not great.

---------------------------

here are some excerpts, in case you don't want to read:

Byron Scott - “You all know about Reggie Miller, the player, and his numbers are Hall of Fame worthy. I could go on and on and I’m sure he’d like me to do just that, but I’d rather tell you about Reggie Miller the person. Reggie is a warrior. He’s a competitor who plays as hard now as he did in his rookie season, a competitor who plays until the final buzzer sounds, as the Knicks found out in the ’95 playoffs. He’s a competitor who wants the ball on the final possession, who wants to take that final shot. And, quite honestly, who else would you want the ball to go to with the game on the line?”

“Reggie is a leader. He’s one of the first to arrive at practice, one of the last to leave. How many Pacers have become better basketball players simply because they spent time in the same locker room and on the same court with Reggie Miller"

PAt Riley - "Reggie Miller, like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, was the quintessential professional basketball player. Nobody plays this game, at that level, for as long as he has, without doing the things necessary to be great. He was a hard-working, conditioned professional basketball player and I had nothing but the highest respect for him. The years that New York and Indiana, and Miami and Indiana in particular, competed against one another, he was the one that put the most fear in me as a coach."

Jerry Sloan - “I've admired Reggie a great deal over the years I've watched him play because he's a guy that has gotten as much out of his talent as anybody that's played and still enjoys playing. After a guy plays 18 years, you look at 'em and a lot of times they’re a little bit bored but he still has great enthusiasm for the game and works very hard to do the things that he's always done. He's as good as I've ever seen at coming off the baseline screens and catching the ball and shooting it which seems simple, but trying to teach people to do it … he's made it a real art.

"Being with the same franchise 18 years gives you leadership and leadership is hard to come by in this league. You have so many guys that would like to be leaders but not many of them are really interested in the organization. I was fortunate to have two guys (Karl Malone and John Stockton) and to watch Reggie stay here, I know he had a couple of contract things that came up in his career but he stayed here and the Pacers kept him here. It's important to the organization to have continuity with as many players as possible."

---------------------------

wow rick, you s*ck at this don't you?

how can you compare someone to players who never even had as a complete game as miller?

Miller's the league's all-time leader in 3-pointers made and attempted, and nobody else is even close. He stands 12th on the NBA's all-time scoring list.

Now tell me, are Hornacek and Gill near the 12th all-time scoring list?

I don't think so.

----------------------------

you remember Reggie Miller brought the team to the EC finals with 3 of their players injured right? He made no excuses.

But reality bit him.

You stop debating now, you've been schooled, study more and grow.
Ray Allen is a better player than him..IMO
I wasnt going to respond to this question, but after seeing these ignorant responses, i have no choice....

Reggie Miller is a hall of famer, who will go down as one of the best shooting guards ever. There are very few people who were as clutch with the game on the line, ecspecially in the playoffs. He is the all time three point king...no body came off a screen better than reggie miller. AND his defense wasnt as bad as some of your responses indicate. He constantly frustrated oppenents by getting under their skin with his defense. AND he did all this with role players, stockton had malone and jordan had pippen...who the hell did reggie miller have...detlef shremp...rik smits...cmon people, i know you guys are smarter than that.

Give credit where credit is due...Reggie Miller was GREAT
Who the hell is Reggie Miller?
Yea I have to disagree with you here. Reggie played with Indiana forever and made the playoff a bunch of times. Reggie was one the best clutch shooters ever. The all-star game appearances don't mean anything. 5 time all-star is pretty good. No one makes it every year. He played great forever and was one of the best shooters ever. He diserved a title beings he was one of the greatest players ever to play.
yes.
yaa.. you are the only one who thinks that ...!
Lack of defense? ... You mean like this:)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Nf2B2sNl...

Face it , Jordan was OVERRATED - and you know nothing about basketball. ... LMAO!!

Michael Jordan has 6 rings thanks to Pippen. Otherwise , he'd just be a Bald-headed Dominique Wilkins!

MICHAEL JORDAN SUCKS!

_____________

Jordan couldn't even get the Bulls TO the Eastern Conf Finals when he came back ( he was only retired for 1-1/2 seasons). They lost to Orlando in the 2nd round, thanks to a MAJOR Jordan CHOKE!

Why was Jordan 1-10 in the playoffs without Pippen????

You need to get off Jordan's nuts and recognize that it was Pippen that led the Bulls - not Jordan
